In 1888 Japanese Kokichi Mikimoto acquired a loan to begin his first pearl oyster farm in Ago Bay. Although he failed many times and faced near bankruptcy, he was able to finally begin his pearl business and in 1920 they became commercially viable. Mikimoto pearls are produced and marketed by the Mikimoto Company and that is why they are called so. These pearls have become very famous in recent times in the international market and they sell well. Chinese folklore believes that pearls are the tears of a dragon.
Carrie Bradshaw is one of the famous personalities seen wearing the Mikimoto pearls in the Sex in the City movie. This particular pearl worn by Carrie Bradshaw sells for $11,900.
